Does ETH Staking Compound? Compounding vs Direct Rewards Calculator
Short answer · October 25, 2026
Sometimes. Whether your ETH staking rewards compound depends on where they land:
- Compound: solo validators with 0x02 credentials (in 1 ETH steps, up to 2,048 ETH), Lido stETH, Rocket Pool rETH, Coinbase (restaked every 3 days) and Kraken (weekly, U.S. terms).
- Paid out, no compounding: 0x01 validators (excess over 32 ETH is swept out about every 6.8 days), tips and MEV on any validator, and existing Coinbase stakers in CA, MD, NJ and WI.
- How much it matters: on 32 ETH, nothing in year 1; about 0.92 ETH (≈ $2,156) after 10 years at today’s ~2.59% rate. Fees matter more.

Enter how much ETH you stake and for how long. Each row shows the ETH you would hold at the end if rewards compound the way that method pays them, next to the same rewards paid out and not reinvested. Provider rates are their published net rates on Oct 25, 2026, scaled if you change the network rate.
| Method | Net rate | ETH after 10 yr | If paid out | Compounding adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solo validator, 0x02 (compounding)consensus rewards compound in 1 ETH steps | 2.59% | 41.2051 | 40.2880 | 0.9171 ≈ $2,156 |
| Solo validator, 0x01 (swept out)1 × 32 ETH staked; rewards paid out | 2.59% | 40.2880 | 40.2880 | 0.0000 ≈ $0 |
| Lido stETH / wstETHdaily rebase, 10% fee | 2.31% | 40.3273 | 39.4016 | 0.9257 ≈ $2,176 |
| Rocket Pool rETHexchange rate ~daily, 14% fee | 1.82% | 38.3836 | 37.8208 | 0.5628 ≈ $1,323 |
| Kraken bonded ETHweekly, 25% under $1M (U.S. terms) | 2.15% | 39.6818 | 38.8864 | 0.7954 ≈ $1,869 |
| Coinbaseevery 3 days, restaked, 35% fee | 1.65% | 37.7402 | 37.2800 | 0.4602 ≈ $1,082 |
| Coinbase in CA, MD, NJ, WIexisting stakers: no restaking | 1.65% | 37.2800 | 37.2800 | 0.0000 ≈ $0 |
On a solo validator, 0x02 ends 0.9171 ETH (≈ $2,156) ahead of 0x01 after 10 years. The first effective-balance step comes after about 1.6 years; effective balance ends at 40 ETH.
Most ETH on these inputs: Solo validator, 0x02 (compounding) (41.2051 ETH ≈ $96,854).
Model: constant rates, no slashing or downtime, no price change. The 0x02 row is simulated day by day with the consensus spec’s 1 ETH effective-balance steps and 0.25 / 1.25 ETH hysteresis; execution-layer tips and MEV are paid to your fee-recipient address and do not compound. 0x01 stakes only whole 32 ETH validators. Real reward rates fall as more ETH is staked.
Compounding vs direct rewards: how each method pays
Every row comes from the protocol spec or the provider’s own documentation, read on October 25, 2026. “Compounds” means rewards are added to the amount that earns without you doing anything.
| Method | Where rewards go | Compounds? | How often | Fee | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solo validator, 0x02 compounding credentials | Consensus rewards stay in the validator balance; effective balance rises in 1 ETH steps up to 2,048 ETH | Yes, consensus rewards only, in 1 ETH steps (first step at 33.25 ETH) | Every epoch (6.4 min); effective balance updated each epoch with hysteresis | 0% | Execution-layer tips and MEV go to the fee-recipient address and do not compound |
| Solo validator, 0x01 credentials | Balance above 32 ETH is swept to the withdrawal address automatically | No (effective balance capped at 32 ETH) | Sweep about every 6.8 days at today’s validator count | 0% | Restake by hand in 32 ETH multiples or switch to 0x02 (irreversible) |
| Solo validator, 0x00 (BLS) credentials | Rewards accumulate but cannot be withdrawn until credentials are changed to 0x01 | No (effective balance capped at 32 ETH) | None until a withdrawal address is set | 0% | 8,823 active validators still had 0x00 credentials on Oct 25, 2026 |
| Lido stETH / wstETH | stETH balance rebases daily; wstETH value rises instead | Yes (Lido: withdrawn CL rewards and EL rewards are restaked) | Daily oracle report, around 12:30 UTC | 10% of rewards | 7-day SMA APR 2.313% after fee (Oct 25, 2026 API) |
| Rocket Pool rETH | rETH:ETH exchange rate rises | Yes, through the exchange rate | Rate updated about every 24 hours | 14% of rewards (5% node + 9% voter) | rETH APR 1.819% (Oct 25, 2026 API) |
| Coinbase (standard ETH staking) | Rewards credited to the staking balance; rewards earned in unstaked form are automatically restaked | Yes | Every 3 days | 35% (Coinbase One 31.75% / 28.5% / 25.25%) | Est. 1.65% APY after commission (Oct 25, 2026) |
| Coinbase in CA, MD, NJ, WI | Existing stakers keep earning; no new principal | No: “rewards will not be restaked or compound” | Every 3 days | 35% | Unstaked principal or rewards cannot be restaked |
| Coinbase Prime (institutional) | 0x01: rewards swept to the staked wallet; 0x02: consensus rewards auto-compound in 1 ETH increments | 0x02 yes; 0x01 no | Claim requests are partial withdrawals (min 1 ETH) | Negotiated | Coinbase sets a default 0x02 validator size of 1,800 ETH to leave room for compounding |
| Kraken bonded ETH staking | Weekly rewards; U.S. version of Kraken’s article: added to your staking balance | Yes per U.S. terms (another regional version says rewards go to the spot balance, not compounded) | Weekly | 25% under $1M (down to 0% at $100M+) | “Up to 2.87% APY” before commission (Oct 25, 2026) |
| Robinhood ETH staking | Rewards paid in crypto on a payout schedule | Not stated by Robinhood | Payout dates shown in app | 25% total; ETH gets 50%–100% of protocol rate | Unavailable in CA, MD, NJ, WI |
Kraken’s support article has two regional versions: the U.S. one says ETH rewards “are auto-compounded and will be added to your staking balance”, another says they “are not auto-compounded and will be added to your spot balance”. Check which applies in your account.
How 0x02 compounding works (and why year 1 shows nothing)
A validator earns consensus rewards on its effective balance, not its actual balance. The effective balance moves in 1 ETH increments and has a buffer: per the consensus spec it goes up only when the balance exceeds it by more than 1.25 ETH, and down when the balance falls more than 0.25 ETH below it (Phase 0 constants, Electra).
- 0x01 and 0x00: the maximum effective balance is 32 ETH. Extra rewards earn nothing; on 0x01 they are swept to your withdrawal address, on 0x00 they pile up until you set one.
- 0x02: the maximum is 2,048 ETH (EIP-7251, live since Pectra on May 7, 2025). A 32 ETH validator starts earning on 33 ETH once its balance passes 33.25 ETH, about 1.6 years at a 2.5% consensus rate, and then every further 1 ETH of rewards adds a step.
- Only consensus rewards compound. Priority fees and MEV are paid to the fee-recipient address on the execution layer (about 0.09% a year now, per ultrasound.money), so they stay outside the validator unless you deposit them.
- Taking rewards out: on 0x02 nothing is swept until the balance passes 2,048 ETH. You withdraw anything above 32 ETH with an execution-layer partial-withdrawal request (EIP-7002), which charges a small dynamic fee.
ethereum.org’s Pectra page uses a simplified example in which a validator earns on its 33rd ETH once its balance reaches 33 ETH (ethereum.org); with the spec’s hysteresis the real trigger is just above 33.25 ETH. Depositing a round number above 32 (say 40 ETH) avoids waiting for the first step, because the effective balance starts at the whole-ETH amount.
32 ETH over 1 to 20 years, by method
ETH you would hold at the end, at constant rates: 2.5% consensus + 0.09% execution for solo validators, and each provider’s published net rate on October 25, 2026 (Lido 2.313%, rETH 1.819%, Kraken 2.152% after its 25% cut of 2.87%, Coinbase 1.65%).
| Years | 0x02 solo | 0x01 solo | Lido stETH | Rocket Pool rETH | Kraken | Coinbase | Coinbase CA/MD/NJ/WI |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 32.83 | 32.83 | 32.75+0.01 compounding | 32.59+0.01 compounding | 32.70+0.01 compounding | 32.53 | 32.53 |
| 2 | 33.67+0.01 compounding | 33.66 | 33.52+0.03 compounding | 33.19+0.02 compounding | 33.41+0.03 compounding | 33.07+0.02 compounding | 33.06 |
| 5 | 36.32+0.17 compounding | 36.14 | 35.92+0.22 compounding | 35.05+0.14 compounding | 35.63+0.19 compounding | 34.75+0.11 compounding | 34.64 |
| 10 | 41.21+0.92 compounding | 40.29 | 40.33+0.93 compounding | 38.38+0.56 compounding | 39.68+0.80 compounding | 37.74+0.46 compounding | 37.28 |
| 20 | 53.01+4.44 compounding | 48.58 | 50.82+4.02 compounding | 46.04+2.40 compounding | 49.21+3.43 compounding | 44.51+1.95 compounding | 42.56 |
“+ compounding” is the extra ETH versus the same rate paid out and not reinvested. Our arithmetic; real rates change and fall as more ETH is staked. Over 10 years a 0x02 solo validator (41.21 ETH) beats Lido (40.33) because it pays no fee, and Coinbase’s 35% cut (37.74) costs far more than compounding adds.
Who uses compounding validators today
We read every active Ethereum validator from a public beacon node at 2026-10-25 16:59 UTC (slot 15,510,296). 0x02 validators are few but large: big stakers have merged many 32 ETH validators into ones holding up to 2,048 ETH.
| Withdrawal credentials | Validators | Share of validators | Effective ETH | Share of staked ETH |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0x02 (compounding) | 23,908 | 2.93% | 18,138,840 | 41.67% |
| 0x01 (rewards swept) | 784,600 | 96% | 25,106,801 | 57.68% |
| 0x00 (BLS, no withdrawal address) | 8,823 | 1.08% | 282,081 | 0.65% |
| 0x02 effective balance (ETH) | 32 | 33-63 | 64-255 | 256-1023 | 1024-2047 | 2048 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Validators | 8,024 | 1,869 | 2,780 | 2,449 | 7,294 | 1,491 |
- 8,024 0x02 validators are still at 32 ETH, many of them recently created or switched; 1,491 have reached the 2,048 ETH cap, where the excess is swept again.
- 8,823 validators still have 0x00 credentials, holding about 46,121 ETH of rewards above 32 ETH that neither compound nor can be withdrawn until a withdrawal address is set.
- About 783,881 validators have excess to sweep. At up to 16 withdrawals per block and 7,200 slots a day, one sweep cycle takes about 6.8 days (Capella spec).
Should you switch a validator from 0x01 to 0x02?
- Good fit: you stake for years, reinvest anyway, want to top up by any amount above 32 ETH, or run several validators you could merge into one.
- It is one-way. The Staking Launchpad says the upgrade “can be done once and is irreversible” (Launchpad FAQ).
- Income stops arriving on its own. If you spend your rewards, you will need partial-withdrawal requests instead of the automatic sweep.
- Excess re-queues. On switching, the spec moves any balance above 32 ETH into the pending deposit queue, so it earns again only after that queue clears (current waits are on our staking queue page).
- How: a consolidation request whose source and target are the same validator, sent from its withdrawal address; the official Staking Launchpad’s validator actions page does this. Type the launchpad address yourself: fake staking sites are a common phishing trap.
Exchanges and liquid staking tokens
Lido says outright that stETH rewards compound: withdrawn consensus rewards and execution rewards not needed for withdrawals are restaked into new validators, and stETH balances rebase daily (Lido docs, Lido). Rocket Pool’s rETH grows through its exchange rate, updated about every 24 hours (Rocket Pool docs).
Coinbase pays ETH rewards every 3 days into your staking balance (Coinbase Help) and says rewards earned in unstaked form are automatically restaked (Coinbase Earn). The exception is California, Maryland, New Jersey and Wisconsin: existing stakers can stay staked, but “rewards will not be restaked or compound” (eligibility). On Coinbase Prime, wallets staked after October 2025 use 0x02 validators, sized at 1,800 ETH by default to leave room for compounding (Coinbase Prime).
Kraken pays staking rewards weekly; its APY figure already assumes weekly compounding (Kraken Support). Robinhood says rewards are paid in crypto on a payout schedule but does not say whether they are restaked (Robinhood). For each provider’s cut, see ETH staking fees compared; for rate history, staking APR history.
Taxes (U.S.): under Rev. Rul. 2023-14 staking rewards are income when you gain control of them. We found no IRS guidance written for 0x02 balances, so ask a tax professional; our staking rewards tax calculator estimates the income side.
Method
- Rules come from the Ethereum consensus specs, EIP-7251 and the Staking Launchpad; provider behavior from each provider’s own pages, read on October 25, 2026.
- Rates: consensus 2.5% and execution 0.09% from ultrasound.money’s validator-rewards API (2.504% issuance, 0.044% MEV, 0.045% tips); Lido and Rocket Pool from their APIs; Coinbase’s published 1.65%; Kraken 2.87% × 0.75. ETH price $2,350.53 (Coinbase spot, October 25, 2026).
- 0x02 is simulated daily: balance grows by effective balance × consensus rate ÷ 365 and the effective balance follows the spec’s step rule, capped at 2,048 ETH. Providers compound at their payout frequency (daily, every 3 days, weekly) or not at all where they do not restake. No slashing, downtime or price change.

ETH staking compounding FAQ
Does ETH staking compound?
It depends on how you stake. On a solo validator with the newer 0x02 (compounding) withdrawal credentials, consensus rewards stay in the validator and count toward your stake in 1 ETH steps, up to 2,048 ETH. On the older 0x01 type, everything above 32 ETH is swept out to your withdrawal address about every 6.8 days, so nothing compounds unless you restake it yourself. Lido stETH and Rocket Pool rETH compound automatically, Coinbase restakes rewards every 3 days (except for existing stakers in California, Maryland, New Jersey and Wisconsin), and Kraken’s U.S. terms say ETH rewards are auto-compounded weekly.
What is the difference between compounding and direct staking rewards?
Direct (paid-out) rewards leave your stake: on a 0x01 validator they are sent to your withdrawal address, so your stake stays at 32 ETH and rewards grow in a straight line. Compounding rewards are added to the amount that earns, so next period’s reward is slightly bigger. At about 2.59% a year the gap is tiny at first: on 32 ETH it is zero after one year on a 0x02 validator and about 0.92 ETH after ten years in our model.
What is a 0x02 compounding validator?
A validator whose withdrawal credentials start with 0x02, introduced by EIP-7251 in the Pectra upgrade (activated May 7, 2025). Its maximum effective balance is 2,048 ETH instead of 32, so rewards and top-ups above 32 ETH count toward its stake. Anything above 32 ETH can be withdrawn with a partial withdrawal request; only the excess above 2,048 ETH is swept automatically.
When does a 0x02 validator’s effective balance go up?
Only in whole-ETH steps, and with a buffer. The consensus spec raises the effective balance when the actual balance exceeds it by more than 1.25 ETH, then sets it to the balance rounded down. A 32 ETH validator therefore needs more than 33.25 ETH before rewards start being paid on 33 ETH, which takes about 1.6 years at a 2.5% consensus rate. ethereum.org’s simplified example says 33 ETH; the spec’s threshold is 33.25 ETH.
Should I switch my validator from 0x01 to 0x02?
If you plan to stake for years and do not need the rewards as income, switching lets them compound and lets you top up above 32 ETH or merge several validators into one. The trade-offs: the change is one-way, rewards stop arriving automatically (you must send a partial-withdrawal request, which has a small fee, to take them out), and on switching any balance above 32 ETH goes through the deposit queue before it counts. The switch is a consolidation request from your withdrawal address, for example through the official Staking Launchpad’s validator actions page.
Do stETH and rETH rewards compound?
Yes. Lido says stETH rewards compound: rewards withdrawn from the consensus layer and execution-layer rewards not used for withdrawals are restaked, and your stETH balance rebases daily (wstETH rises in value instead). Rocket Pool’s rETH exchange rate rises about every 24 hours. On October 25, 2026 Lido’s 7-day average APR was 2.313% and rETH’s 1.819%, both after fees.
Do Coinbase staking rewards compound?
For most U.S. customers, yes: Coinbase pays ETH staking rewards every 3 days into your staking balance and says rewards earned in unstaked form are automatically restaked. In California, Maryland, New Jersey and Wisconsin, existing stakers keep earning, but Coinbase says their rewards will not be restaked or compound, and no new ETH can be staked.
Do tips and MEV compound on a 0x02 validator?
No. Only consensus-layer rewards are added to the validator balance. Priority fees and MEV are paid on the execution layer to your fee-recipient address, so they sit outside the validator unless you deposit them. On October 25, 2026 ultrasound.money put them at about 0.09% a year out of roughly 2.59%.
How much does compounding add to ETH staking?
Little in the first years, more over decades. In our model, 32 ETH on a 0x02 validator ends with 41.21 ETH after 10 years versus 40.29 ETH on 0x01, about 0.92 ETH or $2,156 at $2,351. After 20 years the gap is 4.44 ETH. A lower fee usually matters more: Coinbase’s 35% cut costs more than compounding adds.
Can I reuse this data?
Yes. The CSVs list how ten staking methods pay and compound rewards (with sources) and the 32 ETH results for 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 years; the JSON adds the validator snapshot by credential type and our model assumptions. All are CC BY 4.0: credit “GrowYourEthereum, ETH staking compounding vs direct rewards” with a link to this page.
Rates move. ETH staking rewards change daily and fall as more ETH is staked. Treat the results as an illustration, not a forecast.
