Buy frequency

The power of dollar cost averaging

Dollar cost averaging spreads purchases across time instead of committing everything on one date. A fixed schedule buys more ETH when the price is lower and less when it is higher, but it does not guarantee a lower average cost or a better result than lump-sum investing.

Historical outcomes vary substantially by period. This simulation uses Coinbase Exchange daily ETH-USD candles and excludes trading fees, slippage, taxes, and unavailable trading days, so results remain educational estimates.

How the ETH DCA calculator works

What dollar-cost averaging means

Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) means buying a fixed amount of ETH on a regular schedule, for example $100 every week, regardless of price. When the price is low your fixed amount buys more ETH; when it is high it buys less. The result is an average cost per ETH that smooths out the timing decision many people find hardest.

DCA does not guarantee a profit and it does not beat a single lump-sum purchase in every period. In a market that rises steadily, investing everything at the start usually ends higher. DCA is a risk-management habit: it limits the regret of buying everything just before a fall and makes investing automatic.

How this simulator calculates results

Pick a start date, an amount and a frequency. For each scheduled purchase the simulator takes the daily ETH-USD candle from Coinbase Exchange for that date, records how much ETH the amount would have bought, and adds it up. The current value uses the live ETH price; if the live feed is unavailable the page pauses the valuation instead of guessing.

Results are before fees and taxes. Exchange trading fees, spreads and network withdrawal fees reduce real-world returns, especially for small weekly buys, so compare your exchange's fee schedule before choosing a frequency.

Reading the results honestly

Use the simulator to understand behaviour, not to predict the future.

  • Average cost per ETH: compare it with today's price to see whether the plan is in profit.
  • Total invested versus current value: the gap is your unrealised gain or loss.
  • Try different start dates: a plan started at a cycle peak looks very different from one started at a low.
  • Past performance does not predict future returns; ETH has had drawdowns of more than 70%.

Frequently asked questions

Is DCA better than lump-sum investing in ETH?

Not always. Historically a lump sum often finishes ahead in rising markets, while DCA reduces the damage of buying right before a fall. DCA mainly helps with discipline and timing risk.

How often should I DCA into Ethereum?

Weekly or monthly are the most common choices. More frequent buys smooth the average price slightly more but can cost more in fees, so match the frequency to your exchange's fee structure.

Where does the historical price data come from?

The simulator uses daily ETH-USD candles from Coinbase Exchange and shows the data source and timestamp with the results.

Does the simulator include fees or taxes?

No. Results are gross figures. Subtract your exchange fees and consider tax on any eventual sale; our crypto tax estimator can help with a rough figure.

Can I use this DCA calculator on my website?

Yes. Copy the embed snippet on this page; no account or API key is required.
