ETH Staking Rewards Tax Calculator: Taxable Income, Cost Basis and Sale Gain (2023–2026)
Short answer · Oct 22, 2026
In the U.S., ETH staking rewards are ordinary income at their dollar value on the day you gain control of them, even if you never sell (IRS Rev. Rul. 2023-14; confirmed by the Tax Court in June 2026). Staking 32 ETH through Lido for all of 2025 produced about 0.90 ETH of rewards, or $2,741 of taxable income. At ETH’s $2,386 close on Oct 22, 2026, those same rewards are worth $2,150. That value becomes your cost basis, so selling now would book a capital loss.
$2,741
Taxable income from 32 ETH staked in 2025 (0.901 ETH)
$603
Extra federal tax at 22% (single, $75k other income)
−$591
Change in those rewards’ value to Oct 22, 2026
$1,366
2026 so far, 32 ETH (0.613 ETH to Oct 22)

0.9013 ETH
Rewards Jan 1, 2025 – Dec 31, 2025
$2,741
Taxable income (avg $3,041 per ETH received)
$603
Extra federal income tax (22% bracket, 22.0% effective)
−$591
Gain/loss if sold at $2,386 (worth $2,150)
Your cost basis in the rewards is the $2,741 you report as income. Selling them on Oct 22, 2026 at $2,386 would give a short-term loss of $140 (0.1654 ETH held one year or less) and a long-term loss of $451.
Income recognised by month (2025)
Model: daily accrual at the chosen APR, valued at the Coinbase ETH-USD daily close. Federal income tax only (no state tax, no self-employment tax, no NIIT, no credits). Brackets: IRS Rev. Proc. 2022-38, 2023-34, 2024-40 and 2025-32. Not tax advice.
Staking income per 32 ETH, by tax year
32 ETH held as Lido stETH from January 1, with rewards compounding daily at each month’s on-chain stETH APR (after Lido’s 10% fee) and valued at that day’s Coinbase ETH-USD close. “Worth now” uses the $2,386 close on Oct 22, 2026.
| Tax year | Avg APR | ETH received | Taxable income | Avg value per ETH | Worth now | Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 4.36% | 1.395 | $2,493 | $1,787 | $3,328 | $835 (33.5%) |
| 2024 | 3.18% | 1.020 | $3,099 | $3,040 | $2,432 | −$667 (-21.5%) |
| 2025 | 2.82% | 0.901 | $2,741 | $3,041 | $2,150 | −$591 (-21.6%) |
| 2026 (to Oct 22) | 2.37% | 0.613 | $1,366 | $2,229 | $1,462 | $96 (7.0%) |
Staking yield has fallen every year, from 4.36% in 2023 to 2.37% so far in 2026, as more ETH is staked (see ETH staking APR history). The dollar income depends at least as much on the ETH price on the days you were paid: 2024 paid fewer ETH than 2023 but more dollars, because ETH averaged $3,040 on reward days against $1,787.
How ETH staking rewards are taxed in the U.S.
- Income when received. Revenue Ruling 2023-14 (July 2023) says a cash-method taxpayer includes the fair market value of staking rewards in gross income in the year they gain dominion and control, valued at that date and time. It applies whether you stake directly or through an exchange.
- The Tax Court agrees. In Paschall v. Commissioner (T.C. Memo. 2026-46, June 2026), Cardano rewards credited monthly on eToro were income when credited, even though the taxpayer never sold them. The court based this on section 61 itself rather than on the IRS ruling. It is a memorandum opinion with a pro se taxpayer, so its weight as precedent is limited.
- It is ordinary income. Rewards are taxed at your regular rate (10% to 37% federal), not the 0/15/20% long-term capital-gains rates. Holding them longer doesn’t change that.
- Basis = the income you reported. Each reward gets its own cost basis and its own holding period starting the day you received it. A later sale, swap or spend is reported on Form 8949 and Schedule D like any other crypto disposal. Our crypto tax estimator handles those trades.
- Where it goes on the return. For most individuals it goes on Schedule 1, line 8v, “Digital assets received as ordinary income not reported elsewhere”, and you answer “Yes” to the digital asset question on Form 1040. If your staking amounts to a trade or business, it goes on Schedule C, where self-employment tax can apply.
- Forms you may (not) get. Exchanges report staking rewards on Form 1099-MISC when they reach the threshold: $600 for 2025 and $2,000 for payments made after 2025. Form 1099-DA, issued for broker sales starting in 2025, explicitly excludes rewards and staking payments (what 1099-DA does cover). No form does not mean no income.
- Changes are proposed but not law. Congress has looked at letting stakers defer tax on rewards until they sell them, including a Joint Committee on Taxation option (JCX-18-26) and the proposed PARITY Act. As of October 22, 2026, the receipt rule still applies.
When does a staking reward count as “received”?
The answer depends on how you stake. Only the exchange case is spelled out in IRS guidance; the rest is common practice, not settled law.
| How you stake | Usually treated as received | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange staking (Coinbase, Kraken and similar) | When the reward is credited to your account and you can sell it | Usually a Form 1099-MISC above the threshold; Rev. Rul. 2023-14 covers this case directly |
| Solo validator: priority fees and MEV | When ETH arrives at your fee-recipient address | No form; you track it from your own address history |
| Solo validator: consensus rewards | Unsettled. Many stakers use the date the automatic sweep pays the withdrawal address (about every 7 days in Oct 2026); some use the date the balance grows | Before the Shapella upgrade (April 12, 2023) these rewards could not be withdrawn at all |
| Lido stETH (rebasing) | No IRS guidance. Common position: each daily balance increase is income when it appears | Our dataset follows this position |
| rETH, wstETH, cbETH (value-accruing) | No IRS guidance. Many treat the rising exchange rate as no income until sale; others impute income | Swapping ETH for the token may itself be a taxable exchange |
| Staking ETFs (for example ETHB) | The fund stakes, not you; follow the fund’s annual tax information | See the fund’s tax documents; our ETF page lists which funds stake |
The sweep interval is our estimate: 828,206 active validators on our October 20, 2026 count, at up to 16 withdrawals per 12-second block, is about 7.2 days. A pending refund suit, Jarrett v. United States (M.D. Tenn., filed October 10, 2024), argues that rewards a validator creates itself are not income until sold. It was set for trial on September 29, 2026, and we found no reported decision as of Oct 22, 2026. For staking ETFs, see which funds stake on our spot Ethereum ETF comparison.
Taxed on rewards that are now worth less
Because rewards are valued on the day you receive them, a falling ETH price can leave you owing tax on more than the rewards are now worth. Rewards received in 2024 were valued at an average of $3,040 per ETH, and 2025 rewards at $3,041. With ETH at $2,386 on Oct 22, 2026, both years’ rewards are worth about 21% less than the income they created. For 32 ETH that is −$667 for 2024 and −$591 for 2025.
- Those declines are capital losses only when you sell, swap or spend the reward ETH. Until then nothing offsets the income you already reported.
- Net capital losses offset capital gains, then up to $3,000 a year of ordinary income ($1,500 if married filing separately). The rest carries forward (IRS Topic 409).
- Selling only the reward lots, not your original stake, works if you can identify them. That requires records of each reward’s date and value. Many tax tools support specific identification of lots. The ETH tax-loss harvesting calculator estimates the tax saved and covers the proposed crypto wash sale rule.
- Set money aside as rewards arrive. At a 22% bracket, about one-fifth of each reward’s value is owed as federal tax, whatever ETH does later. Large reward income can also mean quarterly estimated payments.

Records to keep for staking rewards
- The date and time of each reward, the amount in ETH, and the receiving address or account.
- The USD price you used and where it came from. Use one consistent source, such as an exchange’s daily close or the price at the time of the transaction.
- For solo validators, keep your validator index, fee-recipient address and withdrawal address, and export the sweep history from a block explorer each year.
- For exchanges, keep the annual 1099-MISC (if any) and the full rewards history export. The 1099 total and your own figure should match.
- Note which lots you later sell, so the basis and holding period on Form 8949 match these records.
New to staking? Start with what Ethereum staking is and Lido vs Rocket Pool vs Coinbase.
Method
- Yield: the monthly Lido stETH APR we measure on-chain from the stETH share rate on the first block of each month (after Lido’s 10% fee). It is a realistic proxy for liquid staking; solo validators earned somewhat more before fees, and exchanges usually less after their commission. You can enter your own APR.
- Prices: Coinbase Exchange ETH-USD daily candles, close at 00:00 UTC, from January 1, 2023 to Oct 22, 2026. Each day’s reward is balance × ((1 + APR)^(1/365) − 1), valued at that day’s close. Exact receipt-time prices would differ slightly.
- Tax: federal income tax only. Extra tax = tax on (other taxable income + rewards) minus tax on other taxable income, using the IRS brackets for each year (Rev. Proc. 2022-38, 2023-34, 2024-40, 2025-32). There is no state tax, self-employment tax, net investment income tax or credits.
- Sale: each day’s reward is a separate lot. It is long-term if sold after the one-year anniversary of its receipt date.

Staking rewards tax FAQ
Are ETH staking rewards taxable in the U.S.?
Yes. Under IRS Revenue Ruling 2023-14, staking rewards are ordinary income in the year you gain “dominion and control” over them, meaning you can sell, exchange or otherwise dispose of them. The amount is their fair market value in U.S. dollars at the date and time you receive them. The U.S. Tax Court reached the same result in Paschall v. Commissioner (T.C. Memo. 2026-46, June 2026), its first decision on staking rewards.
How much tax do I owe on 32 ETH of staking rewards?
On our model, 32 ETH held as Lido stETH earned 0.901 ETH in 2025, worth $2,741 on the days it was received. A single filer with $75,000 of other taxable income is in the 22% bracket, so that adds about $603 of federal income tax. In 2026 through October 22 the same stake earned 0.613 ETH, or $1,366 of income. Use the calculator for your own amount, dates and bracket.
What is the cost basis of staking rewards?
The value you included in income. If you received 0.01 ETH when ETH was at $3,000, you report $30 of income and that 0.01 ETH has a $30 basis. When you later sell it, the gain or loss is the sale price minus that $30, and it is short-term if you held it one year or less and long-term if you held it more than one year, counted from the day you received it.
Do I pay tax on staking rewards if I never sold them?
Yes, under current IRS guidance. The income is recognised when you receive the rewards, not when you sell. That is why stakers can owe tax on rewards that later fall in value: our 2025 rewards were valued at an average of $3,041 per ETH, but ETH closed at $2,386 on October 22, 2026. Selling those rewards would create a capital loss.
Where do I report staking rewards on my tax return?
For most individuals, on Schedule 1 (Form 1040), line 8v, “Digital assets received as ordinary income not reported elsewhere”, and you check “Yes” to the digital asset question on Form 1040. If staking is a trade or business, it goes on Schedule C instead. When you sell the rewards, the sale goes on Form 8949 and Schedule D.
Will Coinbase or Kraken send me a tax form for staking?
Exchanges generally report staking rewards on Form 1099-MISC when they reach the reporting threshold: $600 for 2025 and $2,000 for payments made after 2025. Form 1099-DA, which brokers began issuing for 2025 sales, does not include staking rewards. You must report the income whether or not you receive a form.
How are stETH and rETH rewards taxed?
The IRS has not issued guidance specifically on liquid staking tokens. stETH rebases, so your balance grows every day, and many people treat each increase as income when it appears. rETH and wstETH don’t add tokens; their value per token rises instead, and many people treat that as no income until they sell. Swapping ETH for a liquid staking token may itself be a taxable exchange. This is an unsettled area, so get advice before choosing a position.
When does a solo validator receive staking rewards?
Execution-layer rewards (priority fees and MEV) are paid straight to your fee-recipient address, so they are received when they arrive. Consensus-layer rewards build up in the validator balance and are swept to your withdrawal address automatically; with about 828,000 validators in October 2026 a full sweep takes roughly seven days. Whether you have dominion and control before the sweep is not settled; many stakers use the sweep date. A refund suit over Tezos “baking” rewards, Jarrett v. United States, was set for trial on September 29, 2026.
Do other countries tax staking rewards the same way?
Many do. In the U.K., HMRC treats staking rewards from non-trading activity as miscellaneous income valued in pounds when received, with Capital Gains Tax on any later disposal (HMRC manual CRYPTO21200). Rules elsewhere differ, so check your own tax authority. The calculator’s brackets are U.S. federal only.
Can I reuse this staking income data?
Yes. The monthly and yearly CSVs and the JSON are licensed CC BY 4.0. Please credit “GrowYourEthereum, ETH staking rewards taxable income, CC BY 4.0” with a link to this page.
