Understanding Your Crypto Tax Footprint

Tax authorities around the world have significantly increased their oversight of digital assets. In most jurisdictions, every trade is a taxable event. Buying ETH at $2,000 and selling it at $3,000 creates a realized gain that must be reported.

Holding period can change the rate you should enter. This model splits a trade at 366 days: fewer days use the short-term rate, 366 or more use the long-term rate. That split is a planning assumption, not a legal rule for every country.

These figures use only the rates and transactions you enter. A loss reduces the same holding-period bucket before tax and does not offset the other bucket or create a refund. The tool does not contain current brackets, wash-sale rules, or carryforwards. Use it as a planning model, not a filing number.

How the crypto tax estimator works

Gains, losses and holding periods

In many tax systems, including the United States, selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposal. The gain or loss is the sale value minus your cost basis (what you paid plus fees). Assets held for more than a year are often taxed at lower long-term rates than short-term holdings. This estimator groups each trade into short- or long-term buckets, nets losses against gains in the same bucket and applies the rates you enter.

It is not a bracket lookup or filing engine. You choose the rates, so the estimate is only as accurate as the rates you supply for your jurisdiction and income.

What is and is not usually taxable

Rules vary by country; the following reflects common treatment and is not advice.

  • Selling crypto for fiat, swapping one token for another, or paying for goods: usually a taxable disposal.
  • Moving ETH between your own wallets: usually not a disposal, but keep records and expect a network fee.
  • Staking rewards and airdrops: often taxed as income when received, then again on sale.
  • Losses: can often offset gains; some countries limit or restrict how losses are used.

Keeping records that make tax time easy

Export transaction histories from every exchange each year, label transfers between your own wallets, and keep the date, amount and USD value of every buy, sale and reward. Good records are the difference between a quick filing and an expensive reconstruction. Data you enter here stays in your browser and is not stored.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay tax when I swap ETH for another token?

In many countries, including the US, a crypto-to-crypto swap is a taxable disposal of the token you gave up. Check the rules where you live.

Is transferring ETH between my own wallets taxable?

Generally not, because ownership does not change, but you should record the transfer and any gas fee paid.

Are staking rewards taxed?

In many jurisdictions staking rewards are treated as income at their value when received. Selling them later can create a further gain or loss.

Is this estimate enough to file my taxes?

No. It is a rough planning estimate based on rates you enter. Use dedicated tax software or a qualified professional for filing.

Is my data saved?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you enter is stored on our servers.
