Robinhood vs Coinbase for ETH: Fees, Staking and Transfers

Short answer · October 25, 2026

It depends on which button you press:

  • Simple buys: Robinhood is cheaper. No commission, about $0.95 per $100 in the spread; in Robinhood’s own Sep 18, 2026 test, Coinbase’s simple buy gave 1.89% less ETH on $1,000.
  • Order book: nearly a tie. Coinbase Advanced 0.90% taker vs Robinhood 0.95%; both 0.50% maker. Robinhood publishes cheaper tiers from $10,000 a month.
  • Staking: Robinhood’s cut is smaller (25% vs 35%), but it pays only 50%–100% of the ETH protocol rate, so Coinbase’s 1.65% wins unless Robinhood pays at least 87%.
  • Moving ETH out: Coinbase lets you withdraw ETH on Base, Arbitrum, Optimism and more; Robinhood only on Ethereum and Robinhood Chain.

What it costs to buy ETH on each

Robinhood’s default is market-maker routing. There is no commission line, but Robinhood says that as of June 15, 2026 it receives $0.95 from the market maker for every $100 traded, included in the spread; its own example shows a 0.96% buy spread (Robinhood order routing). Orders fill at the ask, not the mid price shown on the chart.

Robinhood exchange routing sends orders to partner exchanges (EDX Markets and Bitstamp) and charges a visible fee: 0.95% taker and 0.50% maker under $10,000 of 30-day volume, with no rebate to Robinhood (fee schedule). It is the only routing on Robinhood Legend and the mobile ladder, is not on web classic, and is unavailable to North Carolina residents. Limit orders generally rest on Bitstamp’s book at the maker fee.

Coinbase’s simple buy includes a spread in the quote plus a Coinbase fee, both shown on the preview screen; Coinbase publishes no fixed rate, and fees “may vary for similar transactions” (Coinbase fee disclosures). Simple limit orders cost more: a 1% execution fee plus up to a 1.875% Coinbase fee. Coinbase Advanced has no spread markup and charges 0.50% maker and 0.90% taker at the U.S. entry tier since September 16, 2026 (Coinbase).

The Coinbase simple-buy cost of 2.84% is an estimate, not a published rate: it is what Robinhood’s quote test implies if Robinhood’s own cost equals its 0.96% example spread. Check your own Coinbase preview. Order-book spread is left out: in our exchange fee measurements it added under 1 basis point to buys up to $10,000 on the public books we sampled.

Volume tiers: Robinhood publishes its whole ladder

Robinhood’s exchange-routing fee falls with your trailing 30-day exchange-routing volume; upgrades lock in for 7 days (Robinhood fee tiers). Coinbase’s Advanced tiers also start at $10,000, but it only shows rates above the entry tier after you sign in, down to 0 bps maker and 2 bps taker for VIP8.

Robinhood’s own quote test (and what it shows about Coinbase Advanced)

Robinhood’s crypto page publishes ETH quotes from 2026-09-18 that it says a third party verified (Robinhood crypto). It is marketing from one side on a single day, so treat it as a snapshot. Still, it shows two useful things: Coinbase’s simple buy gave about 1.9% less ETH, and Coinbase Advanced gave slightly more ETH than Robinhood at $100 and $1,000.

Staking ETH: smaller cut vs full rate

Robinhood’s total staking fee is 25% of rewards, including a partner fee of no more than 2.75%. Because it collects customer ETH into 32 ETH batches, Robinhood says ETH stakers receive between 50% and 100% of the protocol rate, and rewards start accruing when you stake (Robinhood staking). You can stake as little as $1. Unbonding can take “several weeks” in some conditions.

Coinbase takes 35% as standard, or 31.75%, 28.5% and 25.25% for Coinbase One Basic, Preferred and Premium (Coinbase), and showed an estimated 1.65% APY after commission on October 25, 2026 (Coinbase ETH staking). Coinbase also offers cbETH, a liquid staking token with a 10% commission.

At a 2.54% gross rate (implied by Coinbase’s 1.65% after 35%), Robinhood nets 1.91% if it pays the full rate and 0.95% at the 50% floor. The break-even is about 87% of the protocol rate. Robinhood does not publish its current ETH share, so check the rate in the app before choosing it for staking. Every provider’s cut is in ETH staking fees compared.

State limits: staking is unavailable on Robinhood in California, Maryland, New Jersey and Wisconsin, and Coinbase blocks new staking in the same four states (Coinbase eligibility); existing Coinbase stakers there no longer compound (see does ETH staking compound?).

Moving ETH to your own wallet

Robinhood charges no withdrawal fee of its own and passes on the network fee, estimated before you send. ETH goes to Ethereum addresses (including smart contracts) or Robinhood Chain, which is unavailable for ETH transfers in New York. Deposits are unlimited; withdrawal limits depend on verification and history and cannot be raised manually. Optional address allowlisting adds a 48-hour wait for new addresses (Robinhood transfers).

Coinbase charges a fee based on its estimate of the network fee for a stand-alone send (Coinbase) and lists ETH sends on Ethereum, Base, Polygon, Avalanche C-Chain, Optimism and Arbitrum (Coinbase developer docs); multi-network sends are not available in New York (Coinbase Help). Sending on a layer 2 is cheaper, but only if your wallet is on the same network; see sent crypto to the wrong network.

Either way, the exchange holds the keys until you withdraw. For long-term ETH, compare hardware wallet vs exchange.

Robinhood Gold vs Coinbase One

Robinhood Gold costs $5 a month. Its page lists a 3.6% APY on eligible brokerage cash, a 3% IRA match and futures and options discounts, but no crypto trading-fee discount (Robinhood Gold). Coinbase One costs $4.99 to $299.99 a month and is built around crypto: zero Coinbase fees on simple trades up to a cap (the spread still applies), a lower staking cut and USDC rewards (Coinbase One). Whether it pays is worked out in Is Coinbase One worth it?

Which should you use?

  • Robinhood if you buy small amounts with the default button, already use Robinhood for stocks, or trade $10,000+ a month on exchange routing (its published tiers drop to 0.75% and 0.35%).
  • Coinbase if you will use Coinbase Advanced, want to withdraw ETH on Base or Arbitrum, want cbETH, or stake on an exchange and Robinhood’s batch share is below about 87%.
  • Neither, for the lowest fees: some order books charge less; see the cheapest way to buy ETH and Coinbase vs Kraken.

Method

  • Terms come from Robinhood’s and Coinbase’s own fee schedules, help centers and product pages, read on October 25, 2026 (U.S. customers). We did not place test trades on either platform.
  • Net staking APR = gross rate × (1 − commission), times Robinhood’s 50%–100% batch share. Buying cost = monthly amount × 12 × fee or spread. ETH price $2,337.89 (Coinbase spot, morning of October 25, 2026).
  • We have no affiliate deal with Robinhood or Coinbase.

Robinhood vs Coinbase FAQ

Is Robinhood or Coinbase better for buying ETH?

For small buys with the default buttons, Robinhood is usually cheaper: it charges no commission and earns about $0.95 per $100 inside the spread, and in its own September 18, 2026 quote test Coinbase’s simple buy delivered 1.86% to 1.89% less ETH. If you use an order-book screen instead, they are close: Coinbase Advanced charges 0.90% taker and 0.50% maker at the U.S. entry tier, Robinhood’s exchange routing 0.95% taker and 0.50% maker under $10,000 of 30-day volume. In the same Robinhood test, Coinbase Advanced beat Robinhood’s default by 0.08% to 0.10% on $100 and $1,000 orders.

Does Robinhood charge fees on crypto?

Not a commission on its default routing, but you pay through the spread. Robinhood says that as of June 15, 2026 it receives $0.95 from its market maker for every $100 of crypto traded that way, and its example shows a 0.96% buy spread. With exchange routing you pay a visible fee instead: 0.95% taker and 0.50% maker under $10,000 of 30-day volume, falling to 0.03% and 0.00% at $25 million and above.

Which pays more for staking ETH, Robinhood or Coinbase?

Robinhood takes a smaller cut (25% of rewards versus Coinbase’s standard 35%), but it pools customer ETH into 32 ETH batches and says ETH stakers get between 50% and 100% of the protocol rate. At a 2.54% gross rate that is about 0.95% to 1.91% net on Robinhood versus about 1.65% on Coinbase, which matches the 1.65% Coinbase showed on October 25, 2026. Robinhood only comes out ahead if it pays at least about 87% of the protocol rate. Coinbase One lowers Coinbase’s cut to 31.75%, 28.5% or 25.25%.

Can I stake ETH on Robinhood or Coinbase in New Jersey or California?

No on both. Robinhood lists staking as unavailable in California, Maryland, New Jersey and Wisconsin, and Coinbase says no new principal can be staked in those same four states (existing Coinbase stakers there can stay staked, but rewards do not compound). Residents of those states can still buy ETH on either platform; liquid staking tokens or staking ETFs are the alternatives.

Can I withdraw ETH from Robinhood to my own wallet?

Yes. Robinhood supports ETH withdrawals to Ethereum addresses, including smart contracts, and to Robinhood Chain (not available in New York). It charges no fee of its own but passes on the network fee, which it shows before you confirm. Crypto deposits are unlimited, while withdrawal limits depend on your verification and account history and cannot be raised manually.

Which networks can I send ETH on from Coinbase?

Coinbase lists ETH sends on Ethereum, Base, Polygon, Avalanche C-Chain, Optimism and Arbitrum, so you can withdraw straight to a layer 2 and skip mainnet gas. Multi-network support is not available in New York. Coinbase charges a fee based on its estimate of the network fee for a stand-alone send, shown before you confirm.

Does Robinhood sell my crypto orders (payment for order flow)?

On its default market-maker routing Robinhood receives a rebate from market makers, $0.95 per $100 as of June 15, 2026, which is included in the spread. Exchange routing, available for certain coins in the app and the only option on Legend, receives no rebate and charges a fee instead. Coinbase states that it has no payment for order flow relationships; simple trades execute on Coinbase Exchange’s order book or auctions.

Is Robinhood Gold or Coinbase One worth it for ETH?

Robinhood Gold costs $5 a month, and its page lists no crypto trading-fee discount; its value is mostly outside crypto (cash APY, IRA match). Coinbase One starts at $4.99 a month and waives Coinbase’s fee on simple trades up to a cap, cuts the staking commission and unlocks USDC rewards. See our Coinbase One break-even calculator for when it pays.

Can I reuse this comparison?

Yes. The CSV and JSON list the 15 comparison rows with both companies’ terms, the sources, Robinhood’s exchange-routing fee tiers and Robinhood’s quote-test figures. They are CC BY 4.0: credit “GrowYourEthereum, Robinhood vs Coinbase for ETH” with a link to this page.

Fees change. Both companies say fees and spreads vary and can change. Check the order preview before every trade. Crypto held at either platform is not FDIC or SIPC insured.
