Check immediately before signing

Gas demand can change quickly, and no hour is reliably cheapest. Compare the live estimate with the fee shown in your wallet before you approve the transaction.

Complex actions amplify fee spikes

Deployments, mints, and multi-step DeFi actions use more gas units than a simple ETH transfer. Delay non-urgent actions when the wallet quote exceeds your budget.

Compare Layer 2 total cost

Layer 2 fees are often lower, but the total also depends on the network, action, and any bridge cost. Use an official bridge and compare the complete wallet quote.

Why gas costs vary so much between actions

Every operation on Ethereum consumes a fixed number of "gas units" — a measure of computational work. Sending plain ETH costs exactly 21,000 units every time. A Uniswap v3 swap costs around 130,000 units because it involves multiple storage reads, math operations, and state changes. A smart contract deployment can cost over 1 million units.

The final network fee depends on gas used and the effective fee per gas. Demand can change between the estimate and signing, so use the live planning ranges above and confirm the complete fee in your wallet.

How to reduce your gas costs

Check the current quote rather than relying on a fixed “best hour.” Consider a reputable Layer 2 when the action does not require mainnet, and include any bridge cost in the comparison. For token approvals, review the spender and amount carefully; a lower fee does not make an unsafe approval acceptable.

Gas estimates on this page

Gas unit estimates are based on typical transaction sizes sourced from Etherscan's transaction history and EIP documentation. Actual gas used may vary by 10–30% depending on contract version, token contract complexity, wallet type, and current network state. Treat them as planning ranges and confirm your wallet's simulation and final fee before signing.

Using the gas fee estimator well

Why transaction type matters

Gas price tells you the cost per unit; the transaction type decides how many units you use. A token approval, a Uniswap swap and an NFT mint all touch different amounts of contract storage, so their gas limits differ by an order of magnitude. The estimator multiplies a typical gas amount for each action by the current fee per gas, so you can see the expected dollar cost before opening your wallet.

Limits of any estimate

Real gas use depends on the specific contract and its state. A swap through several pools costs more than a direct one, and the first interaction with a token can cost more than later ones. Your wallet simulates the exact transaction and shows its own estimate: when the two differ significantly, trust the wallet simulation and check you are on the contract you intended.

Frequently asked questions

How much gas does a token swap use?

A simple single-pool swap commonly uses roughly 100,000 to 200,000 gas, and multi-hop routes can use more. The estimator shows a typical range for each action type.

Why is my wallet estimate different from this page?

Your wallet simulates the exact transaction with current contract state, so it is more precise. This estimator uses typical values to help you compare costs and decide whether to wait or move to a layer 2.

Does the gas limit I set change the fee?

You only pay for gas actually used, but if the limit is too low the transaction fails and the gas used is still charged. Keep the wallet default unless you know why to change it.
