Quick answer
ETH on an exchange is not a bank deposit
The FDIC insures deposits at insured banks. It does not insure crypto assets and does not protect you if a non-bank exchange, custodian, or wallet company fails. Coinbase also states that digital assets are not FDIC or SIPC insured. Keep only what you need for near-term trading on a venue, and withdraw the rest to an account whose keys you control.
How hosted custody works
You instruct. The venue signs.
On Ethereum, control of ETH follows control of keys. In a self-custody wallet you hold those keys. In a hosted exchange wallet, the company does. Coinbase says you may instruct a withdrawal at any time subject to outages, downtime, protocol requirements, and other policies, and that retrieving keys from offline storage can delay a transfer. Convenience and recovery through a password are the trade for that dependency.
The venue holds the keys
ethereum.org explains that a centralized exchange links you to a username and password you can recover in a traditional way, and that you are trusting that exchange with custody. If the exchange has financial trouble, those funds are at risk. Coinbase’s U.S. user agreement is explicit that it stores the private keys used to process transfers for a hosted Digital Asset Wallet.
On-chain location is not the same as your login balance
Coinbase may hold supported assets across multiple protocols and shared blockchain addresses it controls. It says it keeps separate ledgers for customers, but it has no obligation to create a segregated on-chain address for your ETH. A screenshot of an account balance is not proof that a unique address is reserved for you.
Title language is not a court guarantee
Coinbase’s July 22, 2026 U.S. user agreement says title to supported digital assets in a Digital Asset Wallet remains with you, those assets are not Coinbase property, and they are not subject to claims of Coinbase’s creditors. That is a contractual promise. Other products and legal entities use different terms. A collapse is resolved in court, not in a help-center chat.
Insurance limits
Cash coverage is not ETH coverage
A July 28, 2022 FDIC fact sheet says deposit insurance applies to deposits at insured banks, does not apply to crypto assets, and does not protect against the default, insolvency, or bankruptcy of a non-bank crypto company. Coinbase’s insurance help page, reviewed for this update, repeats that Coinbase is not an FDIC-insured bank and that cryptocurrency is not insured by FDIC, NCUSIF, or SIPC.
USD cash in a Coinbase USD Wallet can be different. Coinbase says that to the extent U.S. customer dollars are held as cash, they sit in pooled custodial accounts at insured banks or credit unions, with pass-through coverage contingent on records and a receiver’s later determination. That still is not insurance on ETH. Crime insurance, if a venue carries it, may cover some theft from the company’s storage systems and still leave losses if totals exceed recoveries. Unauthorized access through your own login is typically excluded.
Documented failure
FTX is a court record, not a forecast for every venue
On March 28, 2024, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced that FTX founder Samuel Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Prosecutors said he misappropriated billions of dollars of customer funds deposited with FTX, using them for personal spending, investments, political contributions, and to repay loans owed by Alameda Research. That is evidence that “the exchange is holding my coins” can be false in practice. It is not a ranking of today’s platforms and it is not a recovery percentage for any estate.
Bankruptcy and criminal forfeiture, when they exist, are slow court processes. They do not restore a withdrawal button. Anyone offering guaranteed recovery for an upfront fee is running a second extraction, which IC3 warns about separately.
Before you deposit
A search result is not a live exchange
People often arrive here after searching a venue name they barely remember. Some of those names belong to companies that already collapsed, rebranded, or never held a licence where you live. Do not send ETH until you can name the current legal entity, open it from a typed URL or official app, and complete a withdrawal to an address you control. For how addresses and lookalikes work, see crypto wallet addresses, checksums, and address poisoning. For hardware key isolation, see Ethereum wallets, recovery phrases, and hardware signing.
Same-day checklist
Seven checks before you trust an exchange balance
1.Read the agreement for the entity and product you actually use
Coinbase’s U.S. Digital Asset Wallet terms are not universal. Futures, cards, other countries, and other brands publish different creditor and title language. Open the current user agreement from the venue’s own site, not a screenshot in a group chat.
2.Separate ETH from cash in your head
FDIC coverage, when it exists at all, is about deposits at insured banks. Coinbase says cryptocurrency is not FDIC, NCUSIF, or SIPC insured. A USD balance can have different rules from an ETH balance in the same app.
3.Prove a withdrawal before you leave sizeable ETH on the venue
Send a small amount to an address whose keys you control, wait for the transaction to confirm, and only then decide what remains on the exchange. A deposit that works is not evidence that withdrawals will keep working.
4.Keep trading inventory small
Leave on the exchange only what you need for near-term orders. ethereum.org’s wallet guidance is that exchange financial trouble puts hosted funds at risk. Long-term ETH belongs in self-custody you understand.
5.Verify the live domain before a first deposit
Type the URL or use the official app. A search snippet, sponsored result, or old brand name is not proof the company still operates or still holds customer assets. If you cannot confirm the legal name and a working withdrawal path, do not deposit.
6.Refuse seed phrases and “safe wallet” moves during a scare
A freeze is when impersonators show up. Real support will not need your recovery phrase. See the fake exchange-support guide before you take a call, a Telegram handle, or a remote-access prompt.
7.If withdrawals stop, preserve records and ignore paid recovery chats
Save statements, transaction hashes, and the legal entity name. IC3 says cryptocurrency transfers are irrevocable and warns against recovery services that charge an upfront fee. File at ic3.gov. A court claims portal, if one exists, is not a stranger in a DM.

Exchange failure FAQ
Is ETH on an exchange protected by FDIC insurance?
No. The FDIC states it does not insure crypto assets and does not protect against the bankruptcy of a non-bank crypto company. Coinbase’s U.S. user agreement and insurance help page also say digital assets are not FDIC or SIPC insured. USD cash held at an insured bank can be different from ETH sitting in a hosted wallet.
If a U.S. exchange says I keep title to my ETH, am I safe in a collapse?
Contract language is not the same as a court outcome. Coinbase’s July 22, 2026 U.S. user agreement says title to supported digital assets in a Digital Asset Wallet remains with you and those assets are not Coinbase property. Coinbase still stores the keys, may use shared on-chain addresses, and you bear risk of loss. Other products and venues use different terms. Read the agreement that governs your account.
What did FTX show about exchange custody?
On March 28, 2024, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced that FTX founder Samuel Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Prosecutors said he misappropriated billions of dollars of customer funds deposited with FTX. That is a court-documented failure of exchange custody, not a prediction about any living venue.
Does moving ETH to a hardware wallet remove exchange bankruptcy risk?
For ETH you actually withdraw to an account whose keys you control, yes—the exchange no longer holds those keys. ethereum.org says you are then responsible for the recovery phrase, and a hardware wallet keeps keys offline. Losing the phrase can mean permanent loss. Confirmed transfers are generally irreversible.
I searched an old or unknown exchange name. Should I deposit there?
Not until you independently confirm the venue is currently operating, that you are on its real domain, and that you can withdraw to an address you control. A search snippet is not proof a company still exists or holds customer assets safely.
If an exchange freezes withdrawals, can I hire someone to recover the ETH?
Treat guaranteed recovery-for-a-fee offers as a second scam risk. IC3 says cryptocurrency transactions are irrevocable and warns against recovery services that charge an up-front fee. Report at ic3.gov with addresses, amounts, hashes, and dates. A bankruptcy claims process, if one exists, is run by the court—not by a stranger in a chat app.
